Planning a wedding by the water
Water views make for unforgettable photos, but they come with a few extra things to plan for:
- Wind: ceremonies on bluffs, beaches and docks can be breezy. Plan for veils, programs and decorations that can blow away.
- Sun: on the Lake Michigan side the sun sets over the water, so time an evening ceremony or photos around sunset. On the Lake Huron side, sunrise is the showpiece.
- Weather: lake weather changes quickly. Ask every venue for its indoor backup plan.
- Public beaches: a ceremony on a public beach or in a park usually needs a permit from the city, county or state. Venues with private waterfront avoid this.
- Insects: shoreline areas can see seasonal insect hatches in early summer. Ask the venue what to expect for your date.
Choosing the right kind of waterfront
Great Lakes venues give you big-water views and sunsets, while inland lakes tend to be calmer and more private. Riverfront venues in cities like Detroit, Grand Rapids and Battle Creek offer water views with easy hotel access for guests. Decide which matters more to you, the view or the convenience, before you start touring.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a permit to get married on a Michigan beach?
Usually, yes, for public beaches and parks. Rules vary by city, county and state park, so check with the land manager. Venues with private waterfront handle this for you.
