How to Choose a Wedding Venue in Michigan: A Checklist
Your venue shapes almost every other wedding decision, from your date and guest list to your caterer and photographer. This checklist walks through what to decide before you tour, and what to ask once you do.
1. Decide the basics first
Before you contact any venues, settle three numbers:
- Budget: decide roughly how much of your total budget can go to the venue, food and drinks. Venue pricing often bundles these.
- Guest count: a rough count (within 25 or so) tells you which venues can fit you. Use the guest filter on our venue list.
- Season and date range: a flexible date gives you more choices, especially for popular summer and fall Saturdays.
2. Pick a region and a style
Michigan venues range from city ballrooms to lakeside resorts and working farms. Decide whether you want guests close to an airport and hotels, as in metro Detroit, Grand Rapids and Lansing, or whether a destination weekend up north or on the lakeshore fits better. Then pick a style: barn, garden, historic, waterfront, winery, golf club or hotel.
3. Questions to ask on every venue tour
Bring the same list to every tour so you can compare venues fairly:
- Is my date available, and how long can you hold it?
- What's included: tables, chairs, linens, setup, cleanup, a coordinator?
- Do you require your own caterer or bar, or can we bring our own?
- What are the start and end times, and is there an overtime fee?
- Where do the ceremony and cocktail hour happen, and what is the rain plan?
- What's the deposit, the payment schedule and the cancellation policy?
- Is there a getting-ready space for each side of the wedding party?
- Is the venue accessible for guests with limited mobility?
- Are there any restrictions on music, decorations, candles or sparklers?
4. Read the contract carefully
Before you sign, check that the contract lists your date, times, guest count, the rooms you are renting, everything included in the price and the exact payment schedule. Get any promises from the tour in writing.
When to book
Many couples book their venue about 10 to 14 months before the wedding, and earlier for peak Saturdays in summer and fall. Off-season, weekday and Sunday dates can often be booked with less notice.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most popular month to get married in Michigan?
Late summer and early fall, especially September and October, are the busiest months for Michigan weddings, followed by June. Book early if you want a peak-season Saturday.
Is it cheaper to get married on a Friday or Sunday?
Often, yes. Many venues offer lower rates or minimums for Fridays, Sundays and off-season dates. Ask each venue for its pricing by day of the week.
